American-made Mopeds

August 27, 2012

Welcome. The three major American made mopeds from the 1970’s and 80’s were AMF Roadmaster with McCullough or Minarelli engines, Colombia Commuter, Open Road and Mopet with Sachs or Solo engines, and Murray mopeds with Puch engines. They have their own sections. Here in this section are all the others.

Bonvicini Marino

Pryer is a trade name made up by Pryer Motorcraft, 4563 State Route 235, Ada Ohio 45810. Pryer is mostly known for their three wheeled mopeds (trikes). At least three different two-wheelers have been used to produce three-wheelers. Puch (Austria), Tomos (Yugoslavia), and Moto BM (Italy). The Italian (same as Gadabout) two wheel bikes were made in Bologna Italy, by Moto BM, and then converted into three wheelers in Ohio USA. Later Italian bikes were the Motomarina Raven kind. Various options were offered.

After late 1992, some 1992-93 Tomos two-wheelers were converted into three-wheelers by Pryer, in the USA. The seat and everything behind it, the swinging rear frame, axles, brakes, wheels, etc, was American-made, pretty much. Everything forward of the seat was Slovenian-made, pretty much. There were different choices for the cargo box. Hot food, cold food, flat bed, or a small frame version with either a basket or a locking box. Because a Tomos automatic moped starts easy, with a backwards kick, even stationary with the rear tires on the ground, they make the best choice for a heavy-cargo trike. Other moped trikes with Puch or Minarelli engines must first get the trike moving forward above 7mph to start the engine.

At the time these were considered bicycles, so they could motor to the beach, turn the engine off, and pedal down the boardwalk selling ice cream or pizza. Too bad the deluxe three wheeled moped, with differential drive, and hot/cold food box, costed more than some automobiles! That was the only thing that was not three times as rad.

1940 Whizzer ad

1939-1948 from Wikipedia:

The Whizzer bicycle engine was first produced in 1939 by Breene-Taylor Engineering, a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of airplane parts. By 1942, sales of the engines had not been entirely successful, having sold only about 2500 units. The Whizzer operation was then sold to Dietrich Kohlsatt and Martin Goldman.

By 1943, World War II was well underway, and Whizzer Motors were forced to lobby the United States Government for the right to continue production of what was argued to be a great way for defense workers to travel to and from work.  In 1948, Whizzer sold its first pre-assembled motorized bicycle, the “Pacemaker”.

1948 Whizzer ad for the bike motor kit, price $97, 2½ horsepower. It says “Fits all popular makes of mens ballon tire bicycles. Over 3500 Whizzer dealers at your service.”

1951 ad has motor kit $109,
Ambassador $249 (26″ tires)
Sportsman $249 (24″ tires)
Pacemaker $199 (26″ tires)

1952 Whizzer ad has the motor kit for $109,
and the Sportsman bike for $239, with 138cc
3 horsepower two-speed automatic motor.
From Whizzer Motor Company,
306 S Sanford St, Pontiac Michigan.
Note that the ad says 20″ wheels, which means the rim size. The tire size was 24″ outer diameter.

1948-1954 from whizzermotorbike.com

May 1948: Dietrich Kohlsaat announced that they had sold 150,000 Whizzer engines. The company had over 12 dozen warehouses nationwide that supplied 3500 dealers.

Whizzer announced the Model “J” engine, which had a chrome-plated exhaust pipe and fittings, a new, more-reliable Carter carburetor, and motorcycle-type twist-grip controls. Whizzer sold about 51,000 Model “J” motors at a cost of $97.55.

June 1948: Whizzer introduced the “Pacemaker,” which the company referred to as the “only complete motorbike.” The bike came with the Model “J” engine already attached to the frame and ready to run. The “Pacemaker” retailed for $199.50

Sep 1949: In order to keep pace with its new competition, Whizzer released the Model “300” Motor. This new engine had 7/8 in. valves, a more efficient combustion chamber, better cooling, and a higher compression ratio. These changes resulted in a 3 hp engine that could reach speeds of 40 mph. Whizzer sold about 15,000 Model “300” motors at $109.97 each.

Note that the displacement (138 cc) remained the same on the more powerful “300” motor.

Whizzer released the “Sportsman” motorbike, which was much more like a real motorcycle. The “Sportsman” abandoned pedals altogther and used a kickstarter to get the bike going. The “Sportsman” cost $224.50 for the Standard edition, which had a clutch transmission, and $239.50 for the Deluxe edition, which sported the Bi-Matic automatic transmission.

1951: Whizzer released the “Ambassador,” a motorbike similar to the “Sportsman” but with a full-size frame, larger tires, and greater overall length. The “Ambassador” was the top-of-the-line, with a gloss black finish, ivory trim, and chrome-plating. The Ambassador sold for $249.50, making it Whizzer’s most expensive product.

1952: The company introduced its last major motorbike engine, the “700.” This motor was in many respects similar to the “300,” but it included a new carburetor, a sealed-beam headlight, and a taillight.

1955-1965 from whizzermotorbike.com:

Whizzer Motorbike Company changed names to become Whizzer Industries, Inc. and began to expand into other areas of production. Whizzer Industries produced childrens’ toys and wagons as well as windows and sliding doors. The company continued to sell parts for Whizzer engines and bikes until 1965, but times had changed and the Whizzer was no longer king.

1997-2009: Whizzer motorized bicycles were revived by the “new” Whizzer Motorbike Company, 4751 Glenn Curtis, Addison Texas 75001. They were reproduced in Taiwan by Polar Motor Co. Ltd, in the same style and quality of the originals but with technological improvements. The new side-valve “flathead” motors had the same displacement, 138 cc. But the power and speed were less, 1.95 hp instead of 3.0, and 25-30 mph instead of 35-40. Here are the new Whizzer models, condensed from whizzermotorbike.com:

Taiwan-made Mopeds

August 27, 2012

Welcome. Taiwan mopeds were imported into the United States in the late 1970’s surge of consumer demand. It was common for small companies to order one container with about 100 units. You could order them with your own choice of decals, or blank, or with their default names, like “Speed Bird”. Even the owners manuals, which were made by the manufacturers, were available either with the brand name of your choice, or blank, where you put your own labels.

Many of the Taiwan mopeds sold in the United States were from the Los Angeles area, because of the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest container port in the US, and because it’s the closest port to Taiwan. Most of the lower price Taiwan mopeds, like Moprix, Speed Bird and Wheel King were sold in the urban part of Los Angeles. The opposite of those was the General brand, the high end of Taiwan mopeds, with the highest quality.

Taiwan components are similar and sometimes exact copies of Japanese items, particularly Honda. More will follow later about Taiwan component families, and Asian versus European design philosophy and practices. Basically Asian mopeds are made like scaled down motorcycles, European mopeds are made like scaled up bicycles. That’s an oversimplification.

Crown   made in Taiwan by Dong Yang Motor    Sachs 505-1D engine

This moped is an exact copy of a German-made Hercules/Sachs Balboa/Suburban. Even the diamond shape Hercules logo is embossed into the head light mounts, except without the letter “H”. The brand name on the gas tank is “Crown”. The model name on the side panels is “DYM – 1D”. There was no ID plate so the date is estimated to be 1979-1980. It does not have any DOT approval markings.

The rims are Dong Yang. Hubs look like Grimeca, or an excellent copy.  Head light is CEV. Speedo is VDO. Exhaust is Sachs copy, stamped left and right halves welded down the center line.

Moprix          made in Taiwan by Pou Yen            Tas engine

Moprix was made in Taiwan by Pou Yen Mechanical, and imported by Moprix, 616 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, California 90401 USA. The engine is a Tas BE-48 (Tanaka Kogyo Co. Ltd, Japan). See Sprinter below. Moprix also made an electric moped, way different from the Tas gasoline engine model. See buyers guides p56.

There was a Speed Bird with a Tas engine, identical to the Moprix.

Here is a rare 1980 Moprix top tank moped, made by Pou Yen. It has the same Tas BE-48 engine and components as the step thru model shown above. The top tank gas valve is a 14 x 1 thread. It has a Mitsubishi F1T156 magneto. Coils have a 52 mm hole spacing.

Flying Dutchman Ted Van Der KolkT. & J. Moped, Inc was a formed by Ted Van Der Kolk Sr, and John Cochran. Ted Van Der Kolk, the original “Flying Dutchman” grew up in the Netherlands. He had a moped shop there, as well as souvenir shops in the Dutch West Indies, before moving to California in 1972. Ted was already selling Sparta mopeds and bicycles in the Netherlands. His shop in Glendale, just north of Los Angeles, was open from 1972 to 1991. John Cochran worked for Ted Van der Kolk for awhile, fixing and selling mostly Flying Dutchman mopeds. John Cochran then later formed is own shop, T. and J. Inc, at 3518 Firestone Blvd, South Gate CA 90280, just south of Los Angeles. Later T and J became Moped City, a few doors down, South Gate California.  Most of the Flying Dutchmans in Southern California came from those three shops. Besides teaming up with Van Der Kolk, John Cochran made one of the first moped expansion chamber exhausts, and employed Carlos Rodriquez as main mechanic at Moped City. John Cochran died in 2004. The “Flying Dutchman”, Ted Van Der Kolk, Sr is alive, as of Sep 2013, but in his nineties.

Wheel King’s 16″ wheels and “tubone” frame are like many Italian mopeds. No other Taiwan moped has those Italian features.

The Monza GT piston has a very high top, 22mm from the edge of the pin to the edge of the top dome. Most Garelli moped pistons are 18mm, pin to top. This is like early 1970’s Garelli European models such as Tiger, but with a boost transfer port rectangular window on the upper intake side of the piston. Apparently a Tiger piston, without the transfer port window, works in a Monza GT, but makes less power.

The piston shown in the illustration does not have a boost window, like a Monza GT piston has.

The additional primary shaft changes the direction of rotation. So the G2, V2, and M1 engines rotate in the opposite direction as H1 and H2. Looking at the flywheel from the right side, G2, V2 and M1 rotate clockwise (CEV 6939 magneto with M18 “left hand” points) while H1 and H2 rotate anti-clockwise (CEV 6933 magneto with M14 “right hand” points).

505 has a large flywheel-magneto and an internal pedal shaft. Uses a 1-chain (motor) rear wheel.
504 has a small flywheel-magneto and no pedal shaft. Uses a 2-chain (motor + pedal) rear wheel.

Nationality: The engines are made in Germany, but are sold in different European countries, as well as North and South America and other places. Each country has it’s own laws about how fast and powerful a moped can be. That is why there are so many different speed versions. In Germany, there are two kinds of mopeds:

Mofas are 25 km/h (16 mph), no licence required, minimum age 15, no passengers. German flag“Mofa” is short for motorisertes fahrrad (motorized bicycle).

Mopeds are 40 km/h (25 mph),  drivers license required (any class), minimum age 16. “Moped” is short for motor mit pedale (motor with pedals).

This is why Sachs 504 and 505 engine cylinders either say “40km” or “25km”, in the casting.

Where’s the governor? There is not a “governor” yet the speed and power are governed. Several things are intentionally restricted to limit how much air the engine breathes. The cylinder ports open late and close early, the carburetor and intake are small, the exhaust is small. Each thing has about the same influence. Sachs designed it to be tamper-proof, for safety reasons, so unlicensed riders won’t be able to go over 16 mph. No fun intended.

All 505/1 versions AaBCD BsxCD have a foot brake mechanism. Pedaling backwards applies the brake.
Only some 505/1 versions ADD have a no-foot-brake mechanism. Pedaling backwards does nothing.

Engine cases: The engine cases for 505/1B (25km) are intentionally made different so that the 505/1A,1C,1D (40km) cylinders cannot fit. The cylinder studs are farther inward. That is also why a Sachs cylinder base gasket has slots instead of holes, to fit both types.

Speed conversion: To convert a 25 km to a 40 km you have to change the engine case set, the cylinder, the intake, the clutch plates, the carburetor, the exhaust, and maybe the sprocket(s). That is too many things to be practical.

B10 decomp valves (decompressors)

1. good-used original, 2. new original
3. aftermarket, 4. aftermarket after grinding

Decompression Valve: The aftermarket decomp valve looks different from the original (made in Germany by Karcoma). You can see it’s longer, but when installed it’s about the same. Many of these sold elsewhere do not fit in the outer hole. Ones sold here have been machined slightly smaller to allow installation.

Start cable: There are different Sachs 504/505 start cables on different bikes. The cable upper end depends on what start lever, and the cable length depends on what frame and handlebar. The one cable offered here is single ended for a 70’s Magura start lever with pinch screw. It is also extra long to fit most bikes. It does not fit other controls like on Taiwan mopeds such as General. Those require double ended cables. See Sachs Cables to get the appropriate start cable for your type of bike.

The older version ’77-79? of foot brake lever 0248.153.400 and driver tube assembly 0285.120.000 had one flat side. Many became rounded out. So around ’78 to ’80 Sachs improved the lever 0248.153.500 and driver tube assembly 0285.120.200 to have two flat sides. The 1-flat lever will fit a 2-flat driver tube, but not visa versa, unless one of the flats is filed round.

Because the model year range for the quantity columns AaBC is ’77-83, and the change happened in ’78-80, some models were before the change and some were after. That is why there are x’s in the quantity columns. The letter “x” here means “some”.

Some 505/1 engines, 1A and 1D were also made with no foot brake. On those, items E7, 8, 13, 14, 15 were not used, and the driver tube bare was 0232.048.203 instead of 202 or 302 or 402. That is why there are x’s in the quantity columns in the first row of E10.

Exhaust header pipe: From a distance or a photo you can tell the speed and power by how thick the exhaust header pipe is. Thinner pipes are on less powerful, slower versions.

Header pipe diameter: The inner diameter is specified. Add 2.0 or 2.5 mm to get the outer diameter. In the example “26 x 400 and 24 x 200” means the first 400 mm has an ID of 26 and the last 200 has an ID of 24. The first 350 mm of the exhaust header pipe is exposed to view and rest is hidden inside the tail pipe (muffler).

Header pipe side: Sachs 504 and 505 exhausts can be on either side of the bike, left or right.

Engine cases: The engine cases for 504/1B (25km) are intentionally made different so that the 504/1A, 1C, and 1D (40km) cylinders cannot fit.

Gasket Set 0286 125 051

Before 1977 it was for 504/1 and 504/2. From 1977 on it was for 504/1, 504/2, 505/1 and 505/2 .

This is the 1975 version for 504/ and 504/2 from another online moped shop.
It’s missing the float bowl gasket, and has an extra 15x30x5.5 seal and an extra 2.0 x 6 o-ring for a 505 2-speed.

Minarelli V1

August 26, 2012

The Minarelli V1 moped engine was used on US-models made by Cimatti, Gitane, Testi, Concord, Motron, Fantic, General, AMF, Baretta, Gadabout, Motomarina, Safari and others. It is well made, performs good, and is easy to work on.

1978 Minarelli V1 Owners Manual has six versions, V1, V1N, V1A, each with pedals or kick start.

Carabela Motomatic (49cc pedal) and Carabela Carerra (top tank, 60cc kickstart) moped engines were remakes of early-70’s Minarelli V1. They were made in Naucalpan Mexico, by Acer Mex S.A. under license from Minarelli. The left case #702 is for the bigger 94mm stator plate and metal fan covers. The driveshaft #916 on the right end and drive clutch #4075 have 12mm flat sides instead of 10mm. It has the ’70-78 stub-plane clutch with a ’77-78 castle nut. The start cable has a different stop piece.

Carabela Engine

Fantic mopeds made in Italy had Minarelli engines with different engine covers that said Fantic. This is a Minarelli V1P-Fantic. The fan cover, and fan base are different from Minarelli ones. The screw holes are in different places.

V1A changes:

The cylinder changed from all-iron to all-aluminum with bigger cooling fins.

The head changed to match the cylinder. The head gasket changed from ring type to regular.

No more fan. The problem with the V1 exposed cooling fan, was the fan blades would all break off, if the engine was operated with the fan cover broken inward. So wise Minarelli eliminated the fan. The bigger aluminum cooling fins carried plenty of heat away, as long as the bike was moving through the air.

V1P changes:

The fan, fan cover and fan cover base were improved to resist fan blade breakage and made in black only. The individual parts do not interchange with V1 types

The intake flange hole on the cylinder grew larger, from 12.5 mm on the 1977-79 6-fin late V1, to 14.0 mm on the 1979-86 V1P.

The clutch cover outer surface changed, from a permanent cast-in Minarelli logo, to a rectangular place for a sticker logo. This allowed re-branding.

The piston pin bushing changed to a needle bearing. So the crankshaft rod end also changed, from a bushing type to a needle bearing type. This made it resistant to damage from lack of oil.

The start lever-shaft had already changed 9 months earlier on the 1979 V1, from long 38mm to short 28mm.

V1H changes:

The Minarelli V1H was on some US model mopeds made in 1985-87. The V1H was a V1P with a 40.3 bore, iron-sleeved aluminum cylinder, head, and no cooling fan. The cylinder was still piston port induction (where the intake manifold feeds the cylinder, and the bottom edge of the piston opens and closes off the port hole to make a net suction inward).

V1L changes:

1989 Motomarina with Minarelli V1L

1989 Motomarina with
Minarelli V1L engine

In 1988-89, Minarelli introduced the V1L, a V1 “e” with a crankcase two-petal reed valve. The cylinder was still fan cooled, a V1 all cast iron type, but without any intake port, and a bigger bore, 40.3 instead of 38.8mm. This engine had “crankcase reed valve induction”, a modern design that made more torque, especially take-off. Morini already had success with it’s M1 reed motor eight years earlier, so Minarelli was several years late.

V1HL alum cyl. no fan

In 1988-90, Minarelli made the V1HL, a V1H with a reed valve and no cooling fan. The bore and stroke were the same 40.3 and 42.0.  The cylinder was a V1H type with cast iron core, black powder coated aluminum cooling fins, but without any intake port. The unused intake side of the cylinder wall has a shallow “boost port”. In conjunction with a window high up on the intake side of the piston, the boost port provides a third transfer path from below the piston to above. It is visible at the lower right in the above photo.

Also in 1987-90, Minarelli made the V1HLE (also called V1HL). It was a V1HL (case reed and no cooling fan) with an electric start mechanism, for use on trikes, which are difficult to pedal start. The Minarelli V1HLE electric start high torque one speed was used on late 1980’s Motomarina three wheeled mopeds.

Sparta lo-resSparta currentSparta history, as told by Sheldons Emu:  “Established as a bicycle factory in Apeldoorn, Holland, named Verbeek & Schakel in 1917, the company very soon changed its name to Sparta and produced their first autocycles of 74cc and 98c in 1931 using Sachs engines. During the 1930s they built numerous motorcycles using Villiers engines of 148cc and 200cc, many of which were delivery vehicles for bakers, milkmen and the like, and JLO powered machines were added to the range towards the end of the thirties. Subsequent to WWII 250cc Victoria power units saw service in Sparta motorcycles, and a rather nice 98cc Villiers powered scooter was built between 1953 and 1957. Production of motorcycles ceased in 1965.”

1987 Spartamet

Moped production began in 1931 but got big after WWII and continued strong until the 70’s. 1965 was the peak year for Sparta moped production, with 380 workers making 47,000 units. The 1975 helmet law in The Netherlands made the already declining moped sales worse. Sales got a boost from exports to the US during 1977-1980, but declined after 1980, with new US laws and lower gas prices.  Sparta made it’s last “classic” moped in 1982. In the mid-80’s Sparta and Sachs joined forces to make a gas powered rear-engine pull-start motorized bicycle, the 18mph 30cc Spartamet. That was the last gas powered moped Sparta made, and the single most succesful moped model, after 60 years from 1931 to 1992. In 1990, 105,000 bikes were made, and 20,000 of them (1 out of 4) were Spartamets. Sparta B.V. continues to build bicycles and electric powered bikes. They are still in Apeldoorn, but in a smaller facility, at 37 Wilmersdorf. Tour the superb online Sparta history museum.

Sparta long lo-res

The USA had two kinds of Sparta mopeds, both curvey sheet metal stampings, welded together down the center seam, both with Sachs 504/1A engines (in either 45km=26mph, or 25km=17mph versions). The Buddy aka Foxi has the gas tank in front. The Lucky aka Flying Dutchman has the gas tank in back. Otherwise, everything else is basically the same. Sparta Bromfietsclub of the Netherlands has all the classic Sparta models. The USA models have long bench seats and bigger lights, with brake light and side reflectors. The Netherlands models have solo seats, and a front fender license plate holder.

US Importers/Distributors of Sparta:

Flying Dutchman Ted Van Der Kolk1. Flying Dutchman Moped and Bicycle, Inc

was a company made by Ted Van Der Kolk Sr, at 509-511 E Broadway, Glendale CA 91205, one block west of city hall.

Flying Dutchman LetterheadTed Van Der Kolk grew up in the Netherlands. He had a moped shop there, as well as souvenir shops in the Dutch West Indies, before moving to California in 1972. Ted was already selling Sparta mopeds and bicycles in the Netherlands. His shop Flying Dutchman Moped and Bicycle, Inc in Glendale, just north of Los Angeles, was open from 1972 to 1991. John Cochran worked for Ted Van der Kolk for awhile, then later formed is own shop, T. and J. Inc, at 3518 Firestone Blvd, South Gate CA 90280, just south of Los Angeles. Later T and J (Ted and John) became Moped City (John only), a few doors down, in South Gate CA.  All of the Flying Dutchmans in Southern California came from those three shops.

Sparta Fenders: Front fenders are silver and very rounded, for the 16 x 2.25 tires. Used front fenders from $30 to $50, depending on condition and whether or not it has the braces. Rear fenders are painted the color of the frame. Used good ones in orange, brown, blue for $30 to $40. There are no braces on the rear fender. Foxi GT Sport has chrome fenders and chaingaurd. Myrons does not have any chrome ones, sorry.

Sparta Luggage Racks: Not the extension rack, just the side rails below the seat, used  $30 to $50.

Sparta Rear Shocks: They’re chrome, heavy, and they leak oil when they’re upside down. $15 to $30 each.

Sparta Front Fork Assy: Used but straight. Would probably need painting. $100 to $140.

Fork tubes, swing arms, chain guards, tank chrome covers, and other Sparta items available, but not centerstands.

Sparta Steering Bearing sets:  Brand new steering bearing sets (headsets), shiny in the sealed package. Cups, cones, bearings, nuts. $40

Sparta Speedometer: VDO 60mph, 60mm diameter, black background white numbers N/A. VDO speedo cable $17. VDO speedo driver “11mm Left 16”

Sparta Magneto Parts:

Sparta Magnetos: Sparta (Sachs 504 engine) had different magnetos. Most 1976-1978 Sparta magnetos are Bosch 0212 010 001 (made in Germany). Most 1978-1980 Sparta magnetos are Motoplat (made in Spain). Bosch magnetos, parts, are offered in Bosch magnetos. Motoplat magnetos, parts, are offered in Dansi and Motoplat magnetos.

Sparta Points and Condensers: Bosch and Motoplat types are different. They are both offered in Spark Plugs and Points.

Sparta Bosch stators: are offered in Bosch magnetos. They are 4-wire, 3-coil. Top coils are (behind) ignition (blue wire) and (in front) brake light (green wire and green/black wire). Bottom coil is lights (head light, tail light, speedo light, and horn) (yellow wire). The ignition and light coils are grounded internally. The brake light coil has an external ground. Because of the internal ground on the ignition source coil, the points continuity cannot be checked unless the source coil is disconnected. Bosch has provided a condenser with a screw-on nut with detachable eyelet connector wires, for testing the points for continuity. Otherwise, the ohms of the coil is almost the same as the ohms of the points.

Sparta Wiring: See Service/Electrical/Wiring Diagrams/Sparta Foxi for more Sparta wiring info.
