1978 Minarelli V1 Owners Manual has six versions, V1, V1N, V1A, each with pedals or kick start.

Carabela Motomatic (49cc pedal) and Carabela Carerra (top tank, 60cc kickstart) moped engines were remakes of early-70’s Minarelli V1. They were made in Naucalpan Mexico, by Acer Mex S.A. under license from Minarelli. The left case #702 is for the bigger 94mm stator plate and metal fan covers. The driveshaft #916 on the right end and drive clutch #4075 have 12mm flat sides instead of 10mm. It has the ’70-78 stub-plane clutch with a ’77-78 castle nut. The start cable has a different stop piece.

Fantic mopeds made in Italy had Minarelli engines with different engine covers that said Fantic. This is a Minarelli V1P-Fantic. The fan cover, and fan base are different from Minarelli ones. The screw holes are in different places.

V1A changes:

The cylinder changed from all-iron to all-aluminum with bigger cooling fins.

The head changed to match the cylinder. The head gasket changed from ring type to regular.

No more fan. The problem with the V1 exposed cooling fan, was the fan blades would all break off, if the engine was operated with the fan cover broken inward. So wise Minarelli eliminated the fan. The bigger aluminum cooling fins carried plenty of heat away, as long as the bike was moving through the air.

V1P changes:

The fan, fan cover and fan cover base were improved to resist fan blade breakage and made in black only. The individual parts do not interchange with V1 types

The intake flange hole on the cylinder grew larger, from 12.5 mm on the 1977-79 6-fin late V1, to 14.0 mm on the 1979-86 V1P.

The clutch cover outer surface changed, from a permanent cast-in Minarelli logo, to a rectangular place for a sticker logo. This allowed re-branding.

The piston pin bushing changed to a needle bearing. So the crankshaft rod end also changed, from a bushing type to a needle bearing type. This made it resistant to damage from lack of oil.

The start lever-shaft had already changed 9 months earlier on the 1979 V1, from long 38mm to short 28mm.

V1H changes:

The Minarelli V1H was on some US model mopeds made in 1985-87. The V1H was a V1P with a 40.3 bore, iron-sleeved aluminum cylinder, head, and no cooling fan. The cylinder was still piston port induction (where the intake manifold feeds the cylinder, and the bottom edge of the piston opens and closes off the port hole to make a net suction inward).

1989 Motomarina with
Minarelli V1L engine

In 1988-89, Minarelli introduced the V1L, a V1 “e” with a crankcase two-petal reed valve. The cylinder was still fan cooled, a V1 all cast iron type, but without any intake port, and a bigger bore, 40.3 instead of 38.8mm. This engine had “crankcase reed valve induction”, a modern design that made more torque, especially take-off. Morini already had success with it’s M1 reed motor eight years earlier, so Minarelli was several years late.

V1HL alum cyl. no fan

In 1988-90, Minarelli made the V1HL, a V1H with a reed valve and no cooling fan. The bore and stroke were the same 40.3 and 42.0.  The cylinder was a V1H type with cast iron core, black powder coated aluminum cooling fins, but without any intake port. The unused intake side of the cylinder wall has a shallow “boost port”. In conjunction with a window high up on the intake side of the piston, the boost port provides a third transfer path from below the piston to above. It is visible at the lower right in the above photo.

1987 MotoMarina Tripower
Minarelli V1HLE engine

Also in 1987-90, Minarelli made the V1HLE (also called V1HL). It was a V1HL (case reed and no cooling fan) with an electric start mechanism, for use on trikes, which are difficult to pedal start. The Minarelli V1HLE electric start high torque one speed was used on late 1980’s Motomarina three wheeled mopeds.

Sparta lo-resSparta currentSparta history, as told by Sheldons Emu:  “Established as a bicycle factory in Apeldoorn, Holland, named Verbeek & Schakel in 1917, the company very soon changed its name to Sparta and produced their first autocycles of 74cc and 98c in 1931 using Sachs engines. During the 1930s they built numerous motorcycles using Villiers engines of 148cc and 200cc, many of which were delivery vehicles for bakers, milkmen and the like, and JLO powered machines were added to the range towards the end of the thirties. Subsequent to WWII 250cc Victoria power units saw service in Sparta motorcycles, and a rather nice 98cc Villiers powered scooter was built between 1953 and 1957. Production of motorcycles ceased in 1965.”

1987 Spartamet

Moped production began in 1931 but got big after WWII and continued strong until the 70’s. 1965 was the peak year for Sparta moped production, with 380 workers making 47,000 units. The 1975 helmet law in The Netherlands made the already declining moped sales worse. Sales got a boost from exports to the US during 1977-1980, but declined after 1980, with new US laws and lower gas prices.  Sparta made it’s last “classic” moped in 1982. In the mid-80’s Sparta and Sachs joined forces to make a gas powered rear-engine pull-start motorized bicycle, the 18mph 30cc Spartamet. That was the last gas powered moped Sparta made, and the single most succesful moped model, after 60 years from 1931 to 1992. In 1990, 105,000 bikes were made, and 20,000 of them (1 out of 4) were Spartamets. Sparta B.V. continues to build bicycles and electric powered bikes. They are still in Apeldoorn, but in a smaller facility, at 37 Wilmersdorf. Tour the superb online Sparta history museum.

Sparta long lo-res

The USA had two kinds of Sparta mopeds, both curvey sheet metal stampings, welded together down the center seam, both with Sachs 504/1A engines (in either 45km=26mph, or 25km=17mph versions). The Buddy aka Foxi has the gas tank in front. The Lucky aka Flying Dutchman has the gas tank in back. Otherwise, everything else is basically the same. Sparta Bromfietsclub of the Netherlands has all the classic Sparta models. The USA models have long bench seats and bigger lights, with brake light and side reflectors. The Netherlands models have solo seats, and a front fender license plate holder.

US Importers/Distributors of Sparta:

Flying Dutchman Ted Van Der Kolk1. Flying Dutchman Moped and Bicycle, Inc

was a company made by Ted Van Der Kolk Sr, at 509-511 E Broadway, Glendale CA 91205, one block west of city hall.

Flying Dutchman LetterheadTed Van Der Kolk grew up in the Netherlands. He had a moped shop there, as well as souvenir shops in the Dutch West Indies, before moving to California in 1972. Ted was already selling Sparta mopeds and bicycles in the Netherlands. His shop Flying Dutchman Moped and Bicycle, Inc in Glendale, just north of Los Angeles, was open from 1972 to 1991. John Cochran worked for Ted Van der Kolk for awhile, then later formed is own shop, T. and J. Inc, at 3518 Firestone Blvd, South Gate CA 90280, just south of Los Angeles. Later T and J (Ted and John) became Moped City (John only), a few doors down, in South Gate CA.  All of the Flying Dutchmans in Southern California came from those three shops. Besides teaming up with Van Der Kolk, John Cochran made one of the first moped expansion chamber exhausts, and employed Carlos Rodriquez as main mechanic at Moped City. John Cochran died in 2004. The “Flying Dutchman”, Ted Van Der Kolk, Sr is alive, as of Sep 2013, but in his nineties.

Sparta Cover Parts:

Gas Tank Stickers:  See Accessories/Stickers  Scroll down to #51 and #52 for price/availability.

Sparta Engine Covers: See Frame/Covers

Sparta Frame Parts:

Sparta Fenders: Front fenders are silver and very rounded, for the 16 x 2.25 tires. Used front fenders from $30 to $50, depending on condition and whether or not it has the braces. Rear fenders are painted the color of the frame. Used good ones in orange, brown, blue for $30 to $40. There are no braces on the rear fender. Foxi GT Sport has chrome fenders and chaingaurd. Myrons does not have any chrome ones, sorry.

Sparta Luggage Racks: Not the extension rack, just the side rails below the seat, used  $30 to $50.

Sparta Rear Shocks: They’re chrome, heavy, and they leak oil when they’re upside down. $15 to $30 each.

Sparta Front Fork Assy: Used but straight. Would probably need painting. $100 to $140.

Fork tubes, swing arms, chain guards, tank chrome covers, and other Sparta items available, but not centerstands.

Sparta Steering Bearing sets:  Brand new steering bearing sets (headsets), shiny in the sealed package. Cups, cones, bearings, nuts. $40

Sparta Speedometer: VDO 60mph, 60mm diameter, black background white numbers N/A. VDO speedo cable $17. VDO speedo driver “11mm Left 16”

Sparta Magneto Parts:

Sparta Magnetos: Sparta (Sachs 504 engine) had different magnetos. Most 1976-1978 Sparta magnetos are Bosch 0212 010 001 (made in Germany). Most 1978-1980 Sparta magnetos are Motoplat (made in Spain). Bosch magnetos, parts, are offered in Bosch magnetos. Motoplat magnetos, parts, are offered in Dansi and Motoplat magnetos.

Sparta Points and Condensers: Bosch and Motoplat types are different. They are both offered in Spark Plugs and Points.

Sparta Bosch stators: are offered in Bosch magnetos. They are 4-wire, 3-coil. Top coils are (behind) ignition (blue wire) and (in front) brake light (green wire and green/black wire). Bottom coil is lights (head light, tail light, speedo light, and horn) (yellow wire). The ignition and light coils are grounded internally. The brake light coil has an external ground. Because of the internal ground on the ignition source coil, the points continuity cannot be checked unless the source coil is disconnected. Bosch has provided a condenser with a screw-on nut with detachable eyelet connector wires, for testing the points for continuity. Otherwise, the ohms of the coil is almost the same as the ohms of the points.

Sparta Wiring: See Service/Electrical/Wiring Diagrams/Sparta Foxi for more Sparta wiring info.

Note 1. The price of a good used crankshaft depends mostly on how much wear is where the right bearing contacts the crank.

Note 2. The replacement piston is GOL 0037A-C with the skirt shortened from 23 to 20.5 mm. It has the same dimensions. Both rings are the normal type (rectangular cross-section).

Note 1. The drive sprocket on a ’83-86 pyramid reed engine sticks out farther than non-reed engine. So the non-reed left cover with the dimple over the sprocket won’t fit unless the dimple is cut away leaving a hole.

A. Identification

Model names: S is standard, L is deluxe, T is telescopic fork, V is variator. At first the Model 40 was made with a rigid or a telescopic fork. Then later it was only made with telescopic fork. Motobecane eliminated the unnecessary letter T, so 40TL became 40L and 40TS became 40S.

1. ’74-76 40L (US), 2. ’71-74 40L (Euro)
These have the Dimoby transmission.

1. ’76-77 50L (US), 2. ’74-76 50S (US)
These have the Dimoby transmission.

1. ’76-77 50VL (US), 2. ’71-74 50VL (Euro)
These have the Variator transmission.

Dimoby and Variator: Left is an AV7 Dc Dimoby engine (fixed pulley). Right is an AV7 Vc Variator engine (variable pulley). Both types have dual automatic centrifugal clutches, one for starting and one for running. They are the same except for the pulley-clutch system. They have the same crankcase and crankshaft.

From the right side the Dimoby and Variator engines are indistinguishable. From the left they are distinguished by the belt cover, belt cover mounts and clutch nut depth. The Variator clutch wheel sticks out about 10 mm more than Dimoby, so it has a 10 mm deeper clutch nut.

Motor Mount Bushings (Flexiblocs)
top: #2 tube, #6 left Flexibloc, #3 right Flexibloc
bottom: #6a red rubber, #3a red rubber

The red rubbers replace just the old black rubber part. The old bushing metal shell and metal center tube are re-used. The shell is not removed from the frame so no special press tool is needed. Instead the black rubber is removed with a knife.

But the red rubber holes 9.7 and 12.4 are too small for the center tubes 11.3 and 14.0. The small hole must be widened by drilling. The large hole is a very tight fit without drilling. Drilling is recommended for both.

Cylinders on US models:
53505 is the 20mph cylinder. It says 681051 and TUM207.  The top deck is higher. The exhaust port top is lower.
54328 is the 25mph cylinder. It says S25682051 and TUM207
22340 is the 30mph non-var. It says? 581051 and FB2 47
23460 is the 30mph variator. It says 682051 and most say nothing

Piston (at skirt) to cylinder clearance: new is 0.005 to 0.01 mm (0.0002 to 0.0004″), max is 0.05 mm (0.002″).
This is a very small clearance, measured at the bottom of the piston, allowed by the all-aluminum cylinder.
Usually pistons are measured at the bottom skirt, called “lower” below, because when cold, that is the widest part.
The bottom is slightly wider than the top, because there is less material, and therefore less thermal expansion.
When the piston is hot, the bottom and top are the same. The whole piston expands, as does the cylinder.
Motobecane measures just below the rings, called “upper” below. On these pistons lower is 0.02 mm bigger.
Motobecane original pistons have no marks on top, listed below as “(M)”. Inside has the M logo (some also AJ3).

< Some original replacement pistons have this logo stamped on top, listed as “(Θ)”. Inside says FRANCE.
They also have a size letter stamped on top. These were original replacements from Motobecane USA.
Other vintage aftermarket have no logo on top, listed below as “(O)”.

Note 1. The 19608 20mph case set has a ridge that only allows a 53505 20mph cylinder to fit.

Note 2. At top, the 19609 pre-80 crankshaft has less threads for the 17429 pre-80 domed square-hole flywheel nut.

Note 3. Not shown, the 19609 80-on crankshaft has more threads for the 143195 large hex flywheel nut.

Note 4. At bottom, the 19609r 80-on crankshaft is machined to take regular 6302 15 x 42 x 13 bearings instead of 6302QR 16 x 42 x 13. The press fit is precise and correct. The piston pin and needle bearing are new, included, and factory sealed in wax, that peels off.

1. ’70’s Novi stators, 2. Novi source coils, 3. 20397 cover

Note 1. The ’75-77 2-coil magneto has an external ignition ground on the large lights blade where the black wire goes. The engine could loose spark if the brake lights wires or equipment are disconnected. Always connect that large blade to the engine case with an alligator clip or clip lead, when checking for spark. Motobecane-6V-Wiring-Diagram.jpg

Note 2. The ’78-81 3-coil magneto has an internal ignition ground. So the lights should not matter for spark, but they do! The ignition source coil shares the magnetism of the two lighting coils. At least one of the two lights coils must be active in order to have spark. If they are both disconnected there will be no spark. Always connect either large or small lights blade to the engine case with an alligator clip or clip lead, when checking for spark. Motobecane-12V-Wiring-Diagram.jpg

In June ’76 the start shoe set changed to 22400 on both Dimoby and variator clutch versions.

Dimoby clutch wheels:  to  3-shoe  1, ’77  4-shoe
Variator clutch wheels:   to-’76 21051, ’77-on 22925
Dimoby clutch wheels:  to-’76 21683, ’77-on 22898

Dimoby pulley-clutches: to-’76 21680, ’77-on 22944

The Variator clutch wheel sticks out 18mm more than the Dimoby wheel. So it’s that much closer to hitting the left pedal arm.

Note 1. There are three different sprocket sizes 11, 12 and 13 tooth. Each sprocket has a specific lock lever. The lock lever and sprocket are part of the pulley complete. So there are three pulley completes.

Note 2. The two rubber rings #4 must be removed for the replacement chain 415H because the taller link plates cause the chain to not fit the sprocket correctly. That causes grinding and skipping.

Note 1: The 21439 slide type light switch breaks easily. Because so many have been replaced, the supply has ran out. Fortunately there is an easy way to bypass the broken switch. Simply connect all three white wires together and wrap with tape. Then the lights are always on.

Note 2: In 1978 the voltage regulator under the headlight was eliminated. The horn was relocated from under the gas tank to the fork where the regulator was.

Note 3: The parts catalogs don’t show the horn mounts and they have only one horn part number 20330. So the horns and mounts are identified by actual samples and photos. 17 Motobecane horns came from stripped out bikes in the greater Los Angeles area. 8 were large with fork mount (L shape) brackets. They must be 12 volt ’78-81 because before that the regulator was in that location. 9 were small with under tank mount (twisted) brackets. They are 6 volt ’74-77. This was verified with photos from Motobecane US Models.

Note 4: 20330 horns were sold complete with mount screw, washer and a clamp-on horn button with long wire. This was an add-on option for Euro models. US models already have a built-in horn button. So here the horn is sold with the screw but without the button switch.

Note 5: Batches of used horns are tested on a running bike. They are compared and rated by loudness. Some horns get weaker with age, from corrosion on the aluminum sound plate. Any that are less loud than the others are rejected.

Note 6: Here is the Myrons wiring diagam with notes.

1. Sealed Beam SB Headlights

Sealed beam means the entire glass lens in front and mirror reflector in back, are evacuated of air. The bulb cannot be replaced without replacing the whole glass. These 4.5 inch round head lights, sealed beam or non-sealed, interchange with some tractor lights, auto and motorcycle fog lights, forklift, golf cart, and utility vehicle lights. There are even clear plastic 4.5″ round 12V landscaping lights that can interchange.

Note 2. We is Westinghouse, Wa is Wagner

2. Replaceable Bulb RB Headlights

The bulb is not sealed in. It can be removed and replaced without replacing the whole glass, at a much lower cost.

RB-a/b/c headlights take automotive bulbs with a BA15s base. Bulbs with this base have an 18 to 27 watt rating. That matches the headlight power output of most mopeds. There are three bulb choices, 12V 27w (1156), 6V 21w and 6V 18w (1129). The bulbs are for car turn signals. The 1156 12 volt bulb is sold in every US auto parts store and in some convenience stores. It works on 6 volt bikes but is dimmer.

RB-a/b/c headlights are offered in single filament only, for three reasons. 1) The socket requires a bulb with equal nubs. Common dual filament USA auto bulbs have unequal nubs and unequal filaments. 2) Most moped generators require about 20 watts for each filament. There are 21/5 watt dual filament, but on a generator-powered moped that would quickly burn out the 5W filament, because the generator makes 20 watts. The generator watts must match the total bulb watts, or there will be an under or over-voltage. A 5 watt headlight would get super bright from an over-voltage, and soon burn out, in a few minutes. 3) There are plenty of automotive dual filament headlight bulbs, but they have too many watts and the wrong type of socket.

RB-Ha/b/c/d/e headlights are for mopeds with stronger generators, or motorcycles with moped-size 4.5″ headlights. The bulb is a halogen type. They run hot and require the glass to be clean and free of fingerprints. 12V 55W H3 bulbs are easy to get at USA auto stores. The bulb socket screws onto metal back reflector.

RB-Ha/b/c/d/e headlights are offered in single filament only (no hi and lo beam).

3. Sealed to Non-sealed Conversion

Sealed beam conversion: This upgrade conversion is for sealed beam headlights with a metal back side, not glass. It is a service procedure, not a part replacement. Any metal-backed sealed beam headlight can have a 1 inch hole cut in the back. The hole accepts a snap-on bulb socket. The socket holds an easy to get, low cost automotive bulb, 1156 or compatible. When the bulb burns out, the entire glass does not have to be changed. This is a big advantage.

Metal back: CEV 4.5 inch round headlights with metal backs, can be converted. So can vintage Japanese headlights with metal backs, like most ’60’s to 80’s small Hondas and Yamahas have.

Same plug: When Myrons Mopeds performs the conversion, the wires are transferred over so they still plug in the same way as before.

Hi-lo becomes lo-lo: The high and low beam wires are connected together, so the hi-lo switch does not change anything. The benefit is there are many bulb choices that are inexpensive and easy to get.

Snap-on bulb socket: If you want to perform the conversion, the bulb and snap-on bulb socket can be ordered separately. It has spring loaded wings that hold it in a one inch hole. That is the size just big enough to pass an 1156 bulb through. The snap-on bulb socket has only one wire. A second wire must be soldered to the metal socket. If the 2 or 3 blade plug from the old headlight is transferred to the RBH wires, the bike wires and plug will remain the same.

CEV 4a. CEV Headlights

C.E.V. electrical components are made in Italy since the 1920’s by Fratelli Pagani (Pagani Brothers). CEV lights, switches, speedometers, and magnetos are used on most 1970’s and 80’s European mopeds. C.E.V. is a trade mark that stands for Costruzioni Elettromeccaniche Venegonesi. English translation: Venegonese Electromechanical Constructions. Venegono Inferiore and Venegono Superiore are small municipalities within the Province of Varese in northern Italy. In the 2000’s CEV became part of ZADI.

CEV 4.5 inch Round Headlights

The chrome ring says “Tipo 105″ which is 105 mm at the lip of the glass, and 112 mm (4.5 inch) at the edge. The 4.5” size is also on farm equipment and auxillary vehicle lights.

CEV and Saturnus Rectangular Headlights

CEV Saturnus old

Both CEV and Saturnus made rectangular head lamps for Tomos mopeds 1989 to 2017. They use a large base 12V 25/25w BA20d hi-lo bulb. They are wider than the older round lights, but not as tall. Note how the CEV glass has lots of certifications on it, including SAE and DOT. Then notice how the Saturnus glass has only the E10 certification.

Honda NC50/PA50 Headlight Repair

The plastic mounts on Honda Express NC50 and Hobbit PA50 plastic headlight housings often break. That has consumed the supply of replacement headlight housings.

Here is a way to repair and re-use the broken housing:

Two metal brackets are added outside of the broken mounts. These have rubber grommets that cushion and protect the plastic headlight shell from cracking. But they could also be without grommets.

Snark is a fictional animal in the Lewis Carroll nonsense poem, “The Hunting of the Snark”. It was a trade name made up by Snark Moped, Inc, 300 Milik St, Carteret, New Jersey 07008. The Snark Satellite and Bianchi Satellite, made by Italtelai, are the same as Pacer Super Sport and Arciero top tank mopeds, all with Morini Franco Motori engines.

Left, the Snark Standard (bottom blue) and the Snark Deluxe (top red), with Minarelli V1 engine, are made by Italvelo. A Snark Deluxe is the same as a Bianchi Stardust. See Bianchi above.

Testi

July 13, 2012

Testi    made in Italy by Testi    Minarelli V1 engine

History: Testi is an Italian surname that means “texts” or “verses”. Read more at Registro Storico Testi (Testi Historic Register).

Testi and Minarelli learned about two-stroke engines from Sachs: Umberto Testi’s son Erio Testi worked in his father’s bicycle factory until 1953, when he was sent to Austria, at Fichtel and Sachs, to learn about small two stroke engines. After Erio returned, he transferred the two stroke engine knowledge to his friend Vittorio Minarelli. Vittorio then later went on, after years of automotive engineering study and practice, to form Fabricca Bologna Minarelli FBM, which sometime later became the successful Motori Minarelli. That is why all Testi’s have well-made Minarelli engines.

Testi makes Gitane, Cosmo Amico, Silver Foxi, and other minor brands. Like Minarelli, they were modest and “behind the scenes”, content to sell their products “plain” so that marketing companies could put their own names and logos on. Marketing names wanted you to think they made it themselves, so they would hide the true maker identities.

1977 Testi Mini Cricket and 1978 Testi Cricket

Comparing all of these photos, including the European models, you can see the Cricket is more heavy duty than the Mini Cricket, thanks to a reinforced frame, stronger rear shocks, wider fenders and tires.

The original controls on most Testi mopeds are made in Italy by PV. But the 1977 Mini Cricket is shown with German-made Magura controls. That is likely an upgrade, because the PV controls break easy.
