A dual chain rear hub or wheel has a bicycle type freewheel that surrounds the right rear wheel bearing. That limits the size of the bearing.

That is why the balls are smaller on a dual chain rear hub than on a front hub. You would think they should be bigger, because they carry 3 times more weight than the front.

Grimeca Coil Spring: On steel hub spoke wheels, the center part of the hub is not as big, and there is room for dual small coil springs. Their advantage is they are much easier to install. Brakes can be folded like “from a taco to a tortilla” for installing and “from a tortilla to a taco” for removing.

Grimeca U-Spring: A second type would be the same brake shoes and brake panel, but with the two spring holes near the cam drilled bigger and a free floating horse shoe spring instead of the dual coils. This design is needed for aluminum wheels that have a bigger center portion. Without the “U” spring, the coil springs would rub.

A U-Spring uses the same brake plate as coil springs. There is no visible difference on the outside, between a U-spring brake plate and a coil spring brake plate.

Grimeca V-Spring: A third type is special plate and shoe set designed to be horseshoe spring only. The brake shoes each have a pencil size hole at one end. The stationary post (opposite the cam shaft) goes through the hole in each brake and has a notch at the end for the horseshoe spring. This non-floating horseshoe spring is more “V” shaped. It is held at the tip of the V by a rounded groove in the pivot post. The V-Spring brake shoes are also nicknamed “hole kind”.

There is no visible difference on the outside, between a V-spring brake plate and a U-spring or coil spring brake plate, but inside there are three differences.

1) the cam shaft on a Grimeca V-spring type has a retaining plate, while a coil spring type has no plate (to allow installation by “folding the taco into a tortilla”).

2) the pivot post on a Grimeca V-spring type is longer and has a rounded groove for the V-spring.

3) the pivot post on a Grimeca V-spring has no center groove for retention, while the coil spring and U-spring types have a center groove (for the center ridge on the shoes).

The V-spring design has better retention and safety, but is more difficult to install, because it requires a huge force to spread. See how to spread a V-spring using a home made spreader tool, in the Wheels Service section.

A. Wheels for Sale

1. Introduction

Welcome to Myrons Wheel Parts Department.  Moped wheels are organized here into families with the same size drum brakes. The “Grimeca” family has 90 or 105mm brake drums, with mostly single chain rear hubs. The “Leleu” family has 70, 80, or 100mm brake drums, with mostly dual chain rear hubs. The “Asian” family has 80, 90, 100, or 110mm brake drums, with all single chain rear hubs.

All mopeds had spoke (wire) wheels until 1977, when die cast aluminum or magnesium alloy wheels (mags) came out. A “mag” wheel resists bending, and never has broken spokes. Through the 1980’s there were both  “spoke” and “mag” wheels. But by the 1990’s most mopeds had aluminum “mags”.

Myrons Mopeds Wall of Wheels in 2011

Myrons has about 200 moped wheels, but the more popular ones are scarce. Most of Myrons wheels are in the “raw” state. That means they have not been serviced. Most used moped wheels have bad wheel bearings and/or bent rims and broken spokes. They all need at the very least fresh grease, cleaning, sanding the brake drum, lubing the brake cam.

Some moped wheels interchange but most do not.  Using a wheel from a different moped is not as simple as swapping a car wheel. The brake anchor, the axle spacing, the rim centering, can all be different, resulting in things like tires rubbing and slowing you down, brakes not stopping good, a wobbly feel, or the chain coming off and damaging other things. When the wheel’s inner axle length is too long, the wheel is difficult or impossible to get on or off. When it’s too short, on the front, the front suspension becomes sticky or frozen as the axle nuts are tightened. When the brake anchor is too close to the frame, the brake rubs when the axle nuts are tightened. When it’s too far away, the whole brake plate/panel can suddenly detach from the frame, and rotate with the wheel, wrapping the cable around the wheel, bending the brake arm, and freezing up the rear wheel. When your wheels function and fit properly, you will enjoy riding more, with a smooth, safe, solid, and fast bike.

Terms Used to Describe Wheels:

The wheels below are described by rim width x  rim diameter, and Ø drum diameter.

So a 1.35×16″ Ø90 is a 16 inch rim, 1.35 inch inner width, and a 90 millimeter brake drum.

A 1-chain rear wheel has a motor chain on one side, and a brake on the other side.

A 2-chain rear has a motor chain and brake on one side, and a pedal chain and freewheel on the other side.

Rim and Tire Size illustration

Rim Width is less than Tire Width

1.20 rim takes a 2.00 or 2.25 tire
1.35 rim takes a 2.25 or 2.50 tire
1.60 rim takes a 2.50 or 2.75 tire
1.85 rim takes a 2.75 or 3.25 tire

These are some of Myron’s wheels. There are many more wheels not listed, Grimeca mags, other mags, Leleu, Motobecane, Tomos, Taiwan, Derbi. These wheels are still in the raw state. Most of them need service, usually truing and bearing greasing, sometimes replacing bearings and spokes. Once they are in a state that is ready to sell, they will be photographed, priced, and listed here.

1. Spoke Length

Length can vary by 1 or 2 mm depending on the definition.
Spokes from the bicycle industry use Inner Edge Length.
Spokes from the moped industry use Center Line Length.
Spokes measured directly usually use Total Length.

Here we use Center Line Length. So a spoke that we say is 144 mm long, is 143 mm long from a bicycle spoke supplier, or 145 mm long from simple measurement.

2. Quick Info

Replacement spokes can be up to 2 mm longer or shorter, as long as the original spoke was not already long or short.

Inner or Outer: Spokes can go inside the hub flange or outside. On original moped wheels they alternate inner and outer. Inner spokes are longer because they have less than 90° bend. Outer spokes are shorter because they have more than 90° bend. Here we use the 90 degree equivalent for the named length. See illustration.

Spoke thickness goes by several wire gauge families. Scroll down to Spoke Threads and Gauges for details.

Spoke threads: Most spokes have rolled threads, where the thread tops are raised higher than the spoke. Some spokes have cut threads, where the thread tops are lower than the spoke.

Thread pitch: Here the meaning of “thread” is the width of one thread, in mm. So ten 0.60 threads is 6 mm length.

ID Marks: For each spoke thickness (gauge) there can be several thread pitches. For many that means the ID mark on the spoke must match the ID mark on the nipple. ID marks include (A) (R) Italy, (  ) UK/Asia, () USA, (Б) Swiss, () (U) Germany, (C) (B) (*) (+) or (Я) France. Scroll down to Spoke Threads and Gauges for details.

Spoke head logos (ID marks). See more here

2. Spoke List

Spoke length (from center line) is from direct measurement. Over 90% of the listed applications have been verified by calculation. Scroll down to Length Calculation to see the good agreement between actual and calculated lengths.

The meaning of "size"

Size: The size of a drum brake shoe is not it’s actual length and width. The size is the width, and the diameter of the imaginary circle which the arc is a part of, which is also the brake drum diameter. Notice that the actual length is a little less than the drum diameter. So a 90 x 20 mm brake shoe is actually about 84 x 20 mm.

Brakes that have the same drum diameter and width, can still be different, because of these things: the pivot post can have different positions, thicknesses and widths, the spreader shaft can have different positions, thicknesses and widths, the spring holes can have different positions and widths. So the size is actually several numbers, not just two.

Type: C is open type with coil springs. H is h0le type with coil springs. U is open type with U-spring. V is hole type with V spring.

Brake Shoes listed by Size

Price is for one set. Each set is for one wheel.

80 x 18 C Leleu 80182 $25.0 322G 1 80182

Note 1. EBC322 requires grinding. Without grinding the spring rubs and makes noise. The depth is made just deep enough so that the coils of the spring never touch the brake shoes. In the photo, right is before grinding, left is after.

83 x 18 C Atom 83181 none . . 83181

Note 2. All pre-1978 and some 1978-80 Motobecanes have Motobecane brakes, MB# 21730 (EBC876). There is a left and a right shoe. Most Motobecanes have these brake shoes, but some 1978-80 have Leleu brakes, MB# 16104 (EBC322). On those both shoes are the same, like most other drum brakes.

Note 3. EBC322m is made from a EBC322 by 1. slight grinding of the sides at the spreader end, 2. dremmeling on the inner side of the spreader spring hooks to make the spring stay farther away from the spreader cam, 3. reusing the original MB springs because they are thinner.

90 x 18 V Grimeca 90183 $30.0 931 6 90183

Note 4. The Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe has the most moped applications. It is on almost all Italian moped and mini-bike spoke wheels. It is also on German (Hercules), Austrian (KTM), Yugoslavian (Tomos), Mexican (Carabela), and American (AMF) moped spoke wheels. The Italian made Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe is second only to the French made Leleu 80×18 brake shoe in total number of units.

Note 5. Grimeca-U brake shoes are the same as Grimeca except for the spring. The red places in the photo are what is different. Grinding and drilling are necessary to convert Grimeca type shoes to Grimeca-U type.

Note 6. There is no visible difference on the outside, between a V-spring brake plate and non-V-spring (U-spring or dual coil) brake plate, but inside there are three differences.  1) the cam shaft on a V-spring type has a retaining plate, while a coil spring type has no plate (to allow installation by “folding the taco into a tortilla”).  2) the pivot shaft on a V-spring type is longer and has a rounded groove for the V-spring.  3) the pivot shaft on a V-spring has no center groove for retention, while the coil spring and U-spring types have a center groove (for the center ridge on the shoes). In this photo the left 2 are U-spring and the rest are V-spring.

90 x 20 U Indian 90204 none  . 9 90204

Note 7. These are the older Jawa spoke wheel brake shoes, with 5.0 mm thick lining instead of 2.5mm. That makes the diameter increase from 85 to 90mm, to fit “Italian standard 90mm” moped wheels.

Note 8. These are EBC613 brakes with the pivot post half-hole widened from 8mm to 9mm, for the bigger Indian post, and with thinner Indian coil springs.

Note 9. The 090203 modern aftermarket EBC613 spring holes do not have enough material and strength for a U-spring. The older Indian brake shoes have much more material around the spring holes. So EBC613 cannot safely be drilled out to accept a U-spring. That’s why 090204 replacements are unavailable.

105 x 25 Derbi 105251 $32 . 11 105251 for 10mm cam

Note 10. EBC601 is the same as EBC615, except the lining is wider. Grind off 2.5 mm from each side to make a 615 from a 601.

Note 11. Derbi brake plates can have two different cam thicknesses. Older models 1977-78 mostly had 10mm thick cams and 105251 brake shoes. Later models from about 1979-on had 8mm thick cams and 105252 brake shoes. See photo. 105252 shoes have steel plates on the cam end, but 105251 do not. To make 105252 shoes fit on an early 10mm cam either the steel plates must be removed from the brake shoes, or the 10mm cam ground thinner to 8mm.

Brake Shoes Info

Types: There are four types of drum brake shoes used on mopeds:

EBC 908 brake shoes1. Open type with coil springs: When the center of the wheel is small enough, the open type with coil springs is preferred because servicing is easier. To install, connect the springs and place the shoes in the shape of a taco. Then fold the taco into a flat tortilla. That stretches the springs without any tools. Then tap the shoes with the handle of a screwdriver until they snap into place. The advantage of this style is easy servicing.

EBC880 photoEBC8802. Hole type with coil springs: These brake shoes have a large hole in the pivot post end, and two small coil spring holes. They cannot be installed by “folding the taco into a tortilla”. But they also cannot separate from the pivot post. The advantage is slightly more safety.

When the center of the wheel is big and the brake drum is small, the U spring or V spring type is required. Otherwise the coil springs rub on the wheel center and make a violin sound.

EBC 908D brake shoes3. Open type with U spring: The U spring goes inside the pivot post. The brake shoes and brake plate are the same as the hole type with coil springs. Only the spring is different, a single large U-spring instead of two small coils. For Grimeca 90 x 18, minor modifications to the coil spring brake shoes are required to fit a U-spring. See below. The advantage of this type is greater spring clearance and compatibility with type 1.

Grimeca V-SpringEBC9314. Hole type with V spring: The V spring goes outside the pivot post. These brake shoes have a large hole on the pivot end (not the smaller spring holes), and the V spring goes around the pivot post. So the pivot post has a rounded groove for the spring. The advantage of this type is slightly more reliability and safety.

But installing the spring is difficult and requires a special spreader tool. At left is that tool. It is made from a M6 x 30 screw, nut, washers, special lip-washer for centering, and a 12mm piston pin. The piston pin end and screw head are ground to fit the spring so it can’t slip off. Price $15

Installing Leleu 70mm replacement brake shoes

The replacements have thinner and weaker spring anchor hooks. They can break off during installation when the spring has to be stretched to go over the hook. To prevent breaking the spring hooks, there are two things on the brake plate that need to be ground. One is the top lip on the pivot post. It needs to be reduced in diameter, but with some lip remaining for retention. The top edge needs to be rounded. That helps to not overstretch the spring. Two is the top lip on the spreader cam. It too needs to be reduced, but with some lip remaining for retention.

Once those areas are ground, the shoes can be installed with just fingers and no tools. Do not use prying tools. Only fingers are needed.

A wider Sedona tube is a heavy duty substitute.
Here a 2.75/3.00-16 tube fits in a 2.25-16 tire.
63% more weight for just 22% more price.
More care is required during installation.
The big benefit is a lot less flat tires.

2. Tubes Info

Here are two actual sizes, labeled as four.
Upper 2 say 3.25/3.50-18 and 2.75/3.00-18.

Lower 2 say 2.50/2.75-18 and 2.25/2.50-18.
This is label dishonesty.

Expansion: One tube size can fit a range of tire sizes, because the rubber can stretch. The tube gets bigger as it is inflated with air, until it presses against the inside of the tire.

Correct Size Criteria: When a tube is the correct size for a tire, and it is inflated slightly (but not expanded), it should fit inside the tire. It should not need to expand out to contact the tire. When a tube is too thin, it has to expand, which makes it more vulnerable to punctures. When a tube is too wide, it has to be wrinkled or folded to fit inside a thin tire. Where the folds are at can lead to punctures caused by internal rubbing.

Label Dishonesty: There are some tubes with misleading labels. Like with food, you think you’re getting more than what is actually there. Comparing the weight is the best way to know how much rubber you’re getting. The bicycle industry does the same thing. The label says a bigger size than the tube really is. That uses less rubber, saving the manufacturer money. But the tube has to stretch more when inflated, so the wall thickness is less, which causes it to get punctured easier. Because of this mislabeling, some are recommended for a different width tire than what the box label says. Always compare weights when shopping for tubes, not just “size” and price!

4. Tire and Rim Info

Motorcycle tires are for 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 23 inch rims. See below.

Bicycle tires are for 12(16×2), 13.2(18), 16(20×2), 18 (22×2), 20(24×2), 22(26×2) inch rims.

History: Before the 1970’s motorcycle and bicycle tires were the same. Some time in the late 1960’s, as safety standards improved, motorcycle and bicycle tires were separated. Bicycle tires were given even rim sizes, while motorcycle tires were given mostly odd rim sizes. Motorcycle tires for USA motor vehicles had to comply with DOT safety standards, with speed and weight ratings. Bicycle tires had different safety standards.

Correct size: The insides of the tire must match the outer sides of the rim, where the tire seats at. If the tire fits too loose it will work for low pressure only. At normal or high pressure the loose tire would tend to bulge out, allowing the tube to escape. Then the tube balloons out quickly and pops. If the tire fits too tight, a section of the tire will not stretch over the outer side of the rim. This happens when the center rim band is too wide or when tape is placed over the rim outer sides. In either case the tire will not seat correctly. One or both sides will have a flat section, instead of a perfect circle. That causes a bumpy ride on perfectly smooth streets, less grip and control.

Correct installation: The inner tube must be completely inside the tire, not pinched between the tire and rim. It often gets pinched near the valve stem, if the stem is not pushed way inward before tire mounting. That makes the tire fit too tight, causing the above problems, plus the pinched section will become chaffed (worn), leading to a flat tire later on.

Fourteen inch rims are pretty much only on mopeds and junior off road bikes.

15 inch rim (381 mm)

Wide tires for 15 inch rims are common on modern street motorcycles, like “130/90 -15” (5 inch wide) to “170/80 – 15” (6 1/2 inch wide), but thin 15’s are uncommon. Size “2.50 – 15” (2 1/2 inch wide) is pretty much only found on 1970’s small trail bikes by Yamaha, Kawasaki, and others.  No bicycles have that 381mm rim size. So there’s only this one choice.

16 inch rim (406 mm)

Tires for sixteen inch rims are on about 1/3 of all USA mopeds, while 17″ is the other 2/3. Almost all Italian mopeds use 16″ rims, with mostly 2.25 – 16 (20.5″ OD) tires. Juvenile and BMX bicycles all use 16 inch rims, but they are called 20″ in the bicycle industry. Yes, 20 x 2.125 bicycle tires interchange with 2.25 – 16 motorcycle tires, because they both use 406mm rims. Motorcycle tires for on-road use have to meet US DOT standards, and have many things labeled on the tire. Bicycle tires have different safety standards, and are not legal and not safe to use on on-road motorcycles.

18 inch rim (456 mm)

Some 1960’s tires were labeled narrower than modern tires. The Harley Davidson M65 original tires said 22 x 1 3/4 (1.75 – 18), but they were actually 2.00 or 2.25 in width. You can see the restored M65 rear tire is thinner than the rim. Yet in old photos the tires are wider than the rims. A 2.25-18 motorcycle tire is a better choice than a 22 x 1.75 bicycle tire.

19 inch rim (484 mm)

Many vintage motorized bicycles had 19 inch rims, with (now obsolete) bicycle tires size 23 x 2.0 (equal to 2.0 – 19 or French 550 x 50B). By the 1970’s, tires were smaller and wider, 16 and 17 inch. Of the US model mopeds, only the Solex had 19″ rims. 19 inch tires thinner than 2.75 are not sold by normal USA motorcycle or bicycle tire suppliers. The thinnest “metric street” tire available is 80/90 – 19, which is about 2.75 – 19.

20 inch rim (507 mm)

Some vintage motorized bicycles had 20 inch rims, that accept bicycle size 24 x 2.125 “balloon” tires. For them, fat bicycle tires, for a mini beach cruiser, are an affordable option. Street classic tread all black is shown, but other choices exist. Whitewall 24 x 2.125 available also. Most bicycle shops carry 24×2.125 tires also. The ISO number on every bicycle tire is what tells the rim size. This tire says 57-507, which means 57mm wide (2.24″) and 507mm (20.0″) inner diameter.

(ISO 533 = 21.0”) 2.50 – 21  motorcycle

21 inch rim (534 mm)

Twenty one is a common front rim size on off road and street cruiser motorcycles. The thinnest street tire is 80/90-21, which equals 2.75-21. The thinnest off road commonly available is also 2.75 – 21. Vintage French bicycles had 21″ rims with “600B” or “24 x 1-1/2” tires, but not modern bicycles.

Any rim can be measured to determine the bead diameter, where the tire sits. One way is to wrap a cloth measuring tape around the tire-less rim to measure the circumference, then divide by 3.14. See Sheldon Brown Rim Measuring for more details.

22 inch rim (559 mm)

Some vintage motorized bicycles had 22 inch rims, that accept bicycle size 26 x 2.125 “balloon” tires. For them, wide bicycle tires, for a beach cruiser or mountain bike, are an affordable option. Street classic tread all black is shown, but other choices exist. Whitewall 26 x 2.125 available also. Most bicycle shops carry 26×2.125 tires also. The ISO number on every bicycle tire is what tells the rim size. This tire says 57-559, which means 57mm wide (2.24″) and 559mm (22.0″) inner diameter. For more about tire sizes see Sheldon Brown Tyre Sizing. Bicycle tires are intended for low speed and low weight. They have no motor vehicle safety endorsements, like “street-legal” or “DOT” tires do. They are listed here to show what all the choices are. But they are not recomended for use on motor vehicles.

23 inch rim (584 mm)

Twenty three inch rims are on antique motorcycles, and on some off road front, and also some on road front customs for novelty. Modern downhill mountain bike racers use 23 inch rims, called “27.5 x 2.0”. 1950’s French bicycles use 23″ rims, called “650B” or “26 x 1-1/2”. Some modern commuter bikes also use 650B tires (584mm rim), in-between a mountain bike 26″ (559mm) and road bike 700C (622mm).  Antique motorcycles from the 1910’s, 20’s, 30’s use the bicycle system, where the tire size means the outer diameter. So, at least some 28 x 2.5 tires correspond to 2.50 – 23, but maybe not all. A 28 x 2.5 or 28 x 3.0 antique replica tire costs around $200 and up from Coker Tire. Measure the rim diameter precisely to determine the rim size, on any vintage, antique, or unknown motorcycle. A 23-inch-rim tire costs ten times as much as a 22-inch-rim tire!

24 inch rim (610 mm)

For some reason, there are no bicycles or motorcycles, except for some antique ones possibly, with 24″ rims. If there were any antique motorcycles with “28 x 2.0” or “29 x 2.5″ tires, they likely had 24” rims. Most early motorcycle tires were “28 x 2.5″, assumed to be a 23” rim, or “28 x 3.0″, assumed to be a 22” rim.

25 inch rim (635 mm)

Twenty five inch rims are not on any motorcycle. They are on older traditional bicycles, still common “work horse” bicycles in Europe and Asia, today. In less developed places in the world, the 28 x 1-1/2 tires, rod brake (not cables), always black, classics out number all other vehicles. The “700B” French size tire had a height of 32 or 33mm, to make an outer diameter of 700mm.

As you go back in time, tires were bigger and thinner, just like with automobiles!

5. Dual Meaning of Tire Size

A bicycle 16 inch tire fits inside a motorcycle 16 inch tire.

A 16 x 2.50 fits inside a 2.50 – 16.

Rim size is at bead seat.

Rim size is at bead seat.

The “size” of the tire has a different meaning for bicycles, than for motorcycles and cars. For bicycles, the tire size means the outer diameter of the tire. For motorcycles and cars, the tire size means rim size, which is the inner diameter of the tire. So a 20 x 2.125 bicycle tire fits a 16″ moped rim. Conversely, a 2.25 – 16 moped tire fits a 20″ bicycle rim.

Vintage motorcycle tires: After about 1969, motorcycle tires no longer used the bicycle system. From then on, “22 x 2.0” meant bicycle 18 inch rim, and “2.0 – 18” meant motorcycle 18 inch rim. Bicycles were given the even numbered rim sizes 16, 20, 22 while motorcycles were given the odd numbered rim sizes 17, 19, 21, 23, pretty much. Bicycles were given the “outer times width” syntax “22 x 2.0”, while motorcycles given the “width dash rim” syntax “2.0 – 18”. The “x” and the “-” are not interchangeable. Also the order is not interchangeable. This was a new way to tell the difference between a bicycle tire and a motorcycle tire, just by the “tire size”.

Rim measurement: You can measure any rim with a tape measure, and determine the tire size. Try to measure the rim diameter at the “porch”, where the tire sits, not the “lip” at the very edge. A 16″ rim will have a total diameter of 16.6″. So don’t count the lip.  This method settles the confusion of whether a marking or specification is using the bicycle (tire OD) or motorcycle (tire ID) system. Older mopeds often have 2.25-18 (22 x 2.25) and 2.25-19 (23 x 2.25) tires. They used the bicycle system. Modern moped-size (thin) tires, since the 1970’s, all use the motorcycle system, in the USA. Some modern electric scooters have an oddball size, 16 x 3.00. It’s a bicycle size, because a 16 x 2.25 bicycle tire fits, but wider. It’s a solid aluminum disk rear wheel, and so the inner tube valve stem must be the 90 degree type. The rim diameter at the “porch” is about 12″. A motorcycle inner tube size 3.00-12 fits perfect, but they are only available with straight valve stems. Tires and tubes for those must be purchased from the dealer or distributor of those electric scooters.
