The meaning of "size"

Definition of size

Size: The size of a drum brake shoe is not it’s actual length and width. The size is the width, and the diameter of the imaginary circle which the arc is a part of, which is also the brake drum diameter. Notice that the actual length is a little less than the drum diameter. So a 90 x 20 mm brake shoe is actually about 84 mm long by 20 mm wide.

Brakes that have the same drum diameter and width, can still be different, because of these things: the pivot post can have different positions, thicknesses and widths, the spreader shaft can have different positions, thicknesses and widths, the spring holes can have different positions and widths. So the size is actually several numbers, not just two.

Note 1. EBC322 requires grinding. Without grinding the spring rubs and makes noise. The depth is made just deep enough so that the coils of the spring never touch the brake shoes. In the photo, right is before grinding, left is after.

Note 2. All pre-1978 and some 1978-80 Motobecanes have Motobecane brakes, MB# 21730 (EBC876). There is a left and a right shoe. Most Motobecanes have these brake shoes, but some 1978-80 have Leleu brakes, MB# 16104 (EBC322). On those both shoes are the same, like most other drum brakes.

Note 3. EBC322m is made from a EBC322 by 1. slight grinding of the sides at the spreader end, 2. dremmeling on the inner side of the spreader spring hooks to make the spring stay farther away from the spreader cam, 3. reusing the original MB springs because they are thinner.

Note 4. The Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe has the most moped applications. It is on almost all Italian moped and mini-bike spoke wheels. It is also on German (Hercules), Austrian (KTM), Yugoslavian (Tomos), Mexican (Carabela), and American (AMF) moped spoke wheels. The Italian made Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe is second only to the French made Leleu 80×18 brake shoe in total number of units.

Note 5. Grimeca-U brake shoes are the same as Grimeca except for the spring. The red places in the photo are what is different. Grinding and drilling are necessary to convert Grimeca type shoes to Grimeca-U type.

Note 6. There is no visible difference on the outside, between a V-spring brake plate and non-V-spring (U-spring or dual coil) brake plate, but inside there are three differences.  1) the cam shaft on a V-spring type has a retaining plate, while a coil spring type has no plate (to allow installation by “folding the taco into a tortilla”).  2) the pivot shaft on a V-spring type is longer and has a rounded groove for the V-spring.  3) the pivot shaft on a V-spring has no center groove for retention, while the coil spring and U-spring types have a center groove (for the center ridge on the shoes). In this photo the left 2 are U-spring and the rest are V-spring.

Note 7. These are the older Jawa spoke wheel brake shoes, with 5.0 mm thick lining instead of 2.5mm. That makes the diameter increase from 85 to 90mm, to fit “Italian standard 90mm” moped wheels.

Note 8. These are EBC613 brakes with the pivot post half-hole widened from 8mm to 9mm, for the bigger Indian post.

Note 9. The modern aftermarket EBC613 spring holes do not have enough material and strength for a U-spring. The older Indian brake shoes have much more material around the spring holes. So EBC613 cannot safely be drilled out to accept a U-spring. That’s why Indian90U replacements are unavailable.

Note 10. Many Indian mopeds with beautiful Taiwan-made Mira snowflake mags need these brake shoes, because the originals deteriorate and/or de-laminate. These EBC brakes look different, with different ribs than original, but they are an exact replacement.

Note 11. EBC601 is the same as EBC615, except the lining is wider. Grind off 2.5 mm from each side to make a 615 from a 601.

Note 12. Derbi brake plates can have two different cam thicknesses. Older models 1977-78 mostly had 10mm thick cams and 105251 brake shoes. Later models from about 1979-on had 8mm thick cams and 105252 brake shoes. See photo. 105252 shoes have steel plates on the cam end, but 105251 do not. To make 105252 shoes fit on an early 10mm cam either the steel plates must be removed from the brake shoes, or the 10mm cam ground thinner to 8mm.

Note 13. Derbi 105252 brake shoes (for 8mm cam) are made in two versions that interchange. Derbi-105-open type shoes have half-circle pivot ends, while Derbi-105-hole shoes have full circle pivot ends.

Brake Shoes Info

Types: There are four types of drum brake shoes used on mopeds:

EBC 908 brake shoes1. Open type with coil springs: When the center of the wheel is small enough, the open type with coil springs is preferred because servicing is easier. To install, connect the springs and place the shoes in the shape of a taco. Then fold the taco into a flat tortilla. That stretches the springs without any tools. Then tap the shoes with the handle of a screwdriver until they snap into place. The advantage of this style is easy servicing.

EBC880 photoEBC8802. Hole type with coil springs: These brake shoes have a large hole in the pivot post end, and two small coil spring holes. They cannot be installed by “folding the taco into a tortilla”. But they also cannot separate from the pivot post. The advantage is slightly more safety.

When the center of the wheel is big and the brake drum is small, the U spring or V spring type is required. Otherwise the coil springs rub on the wheel center and make a violin sound.

EBC 908D brake shoes3. Open type with U spring: The U spring goes inside the pivot post. The brake shoes and brake plate are the same as the hole type with coil springs. Only the spring is different, a single large U-spring instead of two small coils. For Grimeca 90 x 18, minor modifications to the coil spring brake shoes are required to fit a U-spring. See below. The advantage of this type is greater spring clearance and compatibility with type 1.

Grimeca V-SpringEBC9314. Hole type with V spring: The V spring goes outside the pivot post. These brake shoes have a large hole on the pivot end (not the smaller spring holes), and the V spring goes around the pivot post. So the pivot post has a rounded groove for the spring. The advantage of this type is slightly more reliability and safety.

But installing the spring is difficult and requires a special spreader tool. At left is that tool. It is made from a M6 x 30 screw, nut, washers, special lip-washer for centering, and a 12mm piston pin. The piston pin end and screw head are ground to fit the spring so it can’t slip off. Price $15
