The 1973 A3 was the third Tomos-designed engine, but was the first widely produced. Before the A1 and A3, Tomos made Puch-designed engines and bikes from 1956 to 1981. That’s why some early A3 parts are the same as 60’s Puch, such as the L17 3-piece bearings. In 1986 (and 1985 Golden Bullet) the crank bearings changed from L17 17x40x10 to 6302 17x40x12. The engine cases got 2 mm wider on each side. Servicing was easier and bearings lasted longer. Also in 1986 the carburetor changed from Encarwi to Dellorto. Servicing became more difficult.

This is both a spec sheet with applications, and a list of parts for sale. Many things that say “none” in the price are listed for information purposes. The purpose is to possibly find substitutes by knowing the original part specifications. Sometimes parts can have different part numbers, but the difference is something minor that does not matter, or can be adapted. Some folks have parts, or see a part for sale, where the part number is known but not what models it’s for or could fit.

#9 Roller Clutch: This is installed with the side with writing on it facing inward, and the no-writing side facing outward. It allows the clutch drum to spin freely in the clockwise direction, but locks solid in the counter-clockwise direction.
#3 shim washer: In the 1970’s, 212957, 212958 and 212959 crankshaft shims were mainly for adjusting the play (looseness) in the L17 (3-piece angular contact) crank bearings, but also for centering the crank in the cases. In the 1980’s Tomos decided the thinner shims 212957 and 212958 were not needed, and discontinued them in the 1984 parts catalog. Two years later in 1985-86 the bearings changed to 6203 (1-piece full contact) type, that do not require side-to-side adjustment of play. The 212959 shim was only for centering the crank in the cases.
#10 shim washer: In the 1970’s, 209073 and 209119 first speed clutch shims were thinner and had smaller increments. A stack of of maybe 3 or 5 was required. In the 1980’s they had the same part numbers, but were made thicker, so less were required, maybe 1 or 2.

Original sprockets have a flat center. Transmission oil is sealed mostly by metal-to-metal. The inner side of the washer #19 seals against the outer side of the sprocket #18. The inner side of sprocket #18 seals against the spacer #17, which seals against the bearing #17, as long as the nut #20 is tight and the sprocket center is not wavy on either side. There is also a seal in the left needle bearing 035502. But it does not hold the oil by itself.
Aftermarket sprockets have a wavy center. That causes oil to leak. The remedy is to change the spacer 209077 to the o-ring type and add the o-ring 033007. That is what Tomos did after 2007, when their original sprockets were no longer made with flat centers. See more about this is at A55 Trans Oil Leak. Another remedy, maybe less effective but easier, is to clean off the oil and use liquid gasket sealer on both sides of the sprocket center. Many aftermarket sprockets also fit loosely, so they’re not centered. That makes the chain pulsate, where it gets slightly tigher and looser every revolution. When the sprocket is centered the chain runs smooth.

1986 was the debut of solid-state voltage regulation, where all the lights are powered by one generator wire. This eliminated the need for multiple lighting output wires and source coils. The generator makes enough watts for all the lights to be on at once. But most of the time some of the lights are turned off. Then the extra watts are absorbed by the regulator, and “wasted” by warming up the frame. So the lights always stay the same brightness, no matter how many are on or off. No more external ignition ground means the engine never looses spark because of the lights, like a pre-1987 Tomos sometimes did.

’74-91 A3, ’92-97 A35 left case had only 3 M4 stator holes.
Only a 3-bolt 90 mm stator fits.
‘98-06 A35, 04-18 A55 left case had 3 M4 and 2 M5 holes.
Either 3-bolt or 2-bolt 90 mm stator fits.
