Square holes: Speedometer cables transmit the wheel rotation to the speedometer. The inner cable rotates as the wheel rotates. The square ends of the inner cable fit into square holes in both the speedometer and the driver unit on the wheel axle. If the square ends fit too tight, they can become permanently stuck in the square hole. If they fit too loose, the small inner square can slip around inside the bigger outer square.
1. Speedometers have a cable hole on the bottom.
2. Speedo drivers on the wheel also have a cable hole.
3. Left is a 1.5 mm square cable end that is too small for a 2.0 cable hole. The cable end corners will soon wear down and slip. Right is a 1.8 mm cable end that fits well.
The cable end for a 2.0 mm square hole should be 1.7 to 1.9 mm. For a 1.8 mm square hole it should be 1.5 to 1.7 mm.
Tomos Speedo Changes
1975 The speedometer had a 2.0 cable hole and M11-0.75 thread.
2003 The speedometer thread changed from M11-0.75 to M10-1.00.
2008 The driver hole changed from 1.8 to 2.0 mm. But the cable lower end did not change. The cables made for 1.8 holes worked on new bikes. But after a few weeks or months the cable would slip in the driver, causing the speedometer to not work.

Note 1. CEV speedometers are listed in CEV Speedometers.
Note 2. This F> was a Tomos replacement for CEV and Facomsa black face. The odometer probably reads in kilometers.
Note 3. This MMB is used in good condition with 11447 miles. It has excellent dampening.
Note 4. This generic is used in good condition with only 400 miles.
Note 5. F> is made by Facomsa. It is on 2009-10 Revival-TS only. The odometer reads in kilometers. At least some or maybe all OEM replacements had M11-0.75 thread instead of M10-1.0.
Note 6. Alpha speedometers did not have enough dampening for the needle movement. Vibration from the running engine made the needle jump around crazy.

Rep1 is a Tomos replacement cable sold online. It does not fit without modification. The white area at the inner wire upper end needs grinding 4.0 to 3.3 mm.
RepT is made from Rep1 in 5 steps. 1. Using a tapered punch, vice and hammer, the upper end tube is bent wider at the entrance flare, from 7.2 to 7.5 mm ID, to fit the 7.4 OD lip on the CEV speedometer. 2. A C-clip, made from a section of a paper clip, is added inside the upper plastic screw cap, if it does not screw on far enough to retain the upper end tube solid, straight and centered. 3. The inner wire is inverted. 4. The 2.0+ mm weld bulge at the tip of the upper square end is ground off to make the tip a 1.9 mm square. 5. The white area at the inner wire upper end is ground smaller from 4.0 to 3.3 mm.
Rep2 is a Tomos replacement cable sold online. It does not fit because the upper end cap thread is M11-1.0 instead of M11-0.75. So, the conduit, with the incorrect end cap trapped on it, is useless. But the inner wire has a good use. It can replace a broken inner wire on an Tomos 227.698 cable, original on 1992 to 2002. Some might need grinding of the 1.8+ mm weld bulge on the lower end to make the tip a 1.7 mm square.
