Welcome to Myrons Mopeds Brakes. This page has been remodeled! Many new discoveries have been made!
Formats and Colors: For each brake shoe or pad, specifications, availability and price are first. Applications (US models unless noted) are next, with F or R wheel in pink, engine in violet blue, pedal mopeds in dark orange, non-pedal mopeds (nopeds) and motorcycles in black, scooters (with a “floor”) in dark aqua, and off-road or dual-purpose bikes in olive. Photos and drawings are on the right. Any notes or extra photos are last. Brakes are listed in order by size, smallest first.
Nomenclature: Brakes that have the same diameter and width do not interchange unless unless the “primary” name is the same. So a 80 x 18mm Honda is different from a 80 x 18mm Leleu. The actual name on the brake shoe can be many different aftermarket names. So the actual name is only a clue, and not as important as the shape and size. The “primary” name is either the original brake maker, or the original bike maker. If there is more than one choice, the name is given to the most popular brand name. For example “Indian” brake shoes are called “Suzuki”.
Brake Shoe Size: The size of a drum brake shoe is not it’s actual length and width. The size is the width, and the diameter of the imaginary circle which the arc is a part of, which is also the brake drum diameter. Notice that the actual length is a little less than the drum diameter. So a 90 x 20mm brake shoe is actually about 84mm long by 20mm wide.
Brake shoe style: There are four main types used on mopeds:
1. “Open” with coil springs: When the center of the wheel is small enough, the “open” style with coil springs, is preferred, because servicing is easier. To install, connect the springs and place the shoes in the shape of a taco. Then fold the taco into a flat tortilla. That stretches the springs without any tools. Then tap the shoes with the handle of a screwdriver until they snap into place. The advantage of this style is easy servicing.
2. “Hole” with coil springs: These brake shoes have a large hole in the pivot post end, and two small coil spring holes. They cannot be installed by “folding the taco into a tortilla”. But they also cannot separate from the pivot post. The advantage is slightly more safety.
When the center of the wheel is big and the brake drum is small, either the “open” style with “U” spring, or the “hole” style with “V” spring is required. Otherwise the coil springs would rub (and sound like a bad violin).
3. “Open” with “U” spring: The “U” spring goes inside the pivot post. The brake shoes and brake plate are the same as the coil spring type 1. Only the spring is different, a single large U-spring instead of two small coils. For Grimeca 90 x 18, minor modifications to the coil spring brake shoes are required to fit a U-spring. See below. The advantage of this style is compatibility with style 1.
4. “Hole” with “V” spring: The “V” spring goes outside the pivot post. These brake shoes have a large hole on the pivot end (not the smaller spring holes), and the “V” spring goes around the pivot post. So the pivot post has a rounded groove for the spring. The advantage of this style is slightly more reliability and safety. But installing the spring is difficult and requires a special spreader tool.

By definition, this is a “V” spring because it goes around the outside of the pivot post. It looks like a “U” spring, but it’s too long to go inside. This same “V” spring might work as a “U” spring on bigger brake shoes.

Most Motobecanes have these brake shoes, but some 1978-80 have Leleu brakes, MB# 16104 (EBC322). On those both shoes are the same, like most other drum brakes.

All pre-1978 and some 1978-80 Motobecanes have Motobecane brakes, MB# 21730 (EBC876). There is a left and a right shoe.

You see how the spring holes are bigger on the right (cam) side? These “Grim90” coil spring brakes have been drilled for the U-spring. So now they are “Grim90U”.

Grimeca 90 coil spring
This Italian Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe has the most moped applications. It is on almost all Italian moped and mini-bike spoke wheels. It is also on German (Hercules), Austrian (KTM), Yugoslavian (Tomos), Mexican (Carabela), and American (AMF) moped spoke wheels. This Grimeca 90×18 brake shoe is second only to the French Leleu 80×18 brake shoe in total number of units.

All of Myrons Mopeds Grimeca brake plates, numbered. See Wheel Parts.
There is no visible difference on the outside, between a V-spring brake plate and non-V-spring (U-spring or dual coil) brake plate, but inside there are three differences.
1) the cam shaft on a V-spring type has a retaining plate, while a coil spring type has no plate (to allow installation by “folding the taco into a tortilla”).
2) the pivot shaft on a V-spring type is longer and has a rounded groove for the V-spring.
3) the pivot shaft on a V-spring has no center groove for retention, while the coil spring and U-spring types have a center groove (for the center ridge on the shoes).

Left two are U-spring. The others are V-spring. See also Grimeca.
