Kreidler MP9 replacement throttle cable (with pipe 2g)  $32

Kreidler original thin throttle cable
makes a sharp bend under the cover.

The original Kreidler throttle cable is thinner than all others, with a 4mm conduit instead of 5mm. The thin conduit allowed it to bend sharply above the carburetor.

Replacement cables all have 5mm conduit that cannot bend that much. So they need to have a curved metal pipe like many throttle cables have.

substitute throttle cable

The curved pipe that works best is #2g listed in the Dellorto carburetor parts section. It has M6-0.75 fine metric threads for a Dellorto carb top. Here it is being used on a Bing carb top with no threads. Fortunately the 6mm Bing carb top hole is just the right size to screw-in the Dellorto curved pipe. Slots are ground in the threads so the curved pipe cuts it’s own threads as it is screwed in. Here is what it looks like screwed on to the Kreidler carburetor.

The original throttle cable 255.04.81-28/36 package says it fits type MF (mofa) from 2231921, and type MP (moped) from frame number 2605111.

Kreidler MP9 front brake cable original 255.04.84  $18

Kreidler brake plates

Kreidler brake plates have special cable stops with 8mm holes instead of 6mm. This makes “universal” cables that fit many mopeds, not fit well on Kreidler. The cable does not stay centered and straight at the cable stop. They need a 8mm “step-ferrule” instead of the usual M6 adjuster at the brake.

Kreidler brakes use Grimeca pinch bolts, like on Italian mopeds. That means the brake arms have 9mm holes with flat sides 7mm.

Kreidler MP9 rear brake cable original 255.04.85  $28
Kreidler MP9 rear brake cable replacement xxxxx  $15

The original rear brake cable comes with an inner wire that is barely long enough, with only 3.9 inch of exposed length. When installed the end is right after the pinch bolt.

The replacement cable has a more correct inner wire length, one inch longer than original. When installed the end is about one inch past the pinch bolt.

The original rear brake cable 255.04.85-18/14 package says it fits type MF (mofa) from 2217511, and type MP (moped) from frame number 2604893.

Kreidler MP9 start cable original 255.04.79  $30
Kreidler MP9 start cable replacement xxxxx $15

The original start cable upper end has a curved pipe with adjuster. This helps prevent the adjuster from getting broken if it contacts certain handlebars the wrong way. It is not necessary. Most other models do not have it.

The replacement cable has no adjuster. Adjustment is made by loosening the pinch screw in the hand lever. The modern lined conduit performs as good as the curved metal pipe did, and it never breaks

The original start cable 255.04.79 (with curved pipe) package did not say what it fits.

Another start cable 255.04.79-6/41 (without curved pipe) package says it fits type MF 2 from 2350620, MF 4 from 2257812, MP 2 from 2704941.

Domino Socket Bolts

Domino Socket Bolts

Domino Socket Bolts: 1970’s Italian moped brake levers and start lever use these adapter pieces to convert the pear end to a longer sideways barrel. They are more than just an adapter, because they have a slot for the inner wire to pass through, to allow installation. There are two lengths, 16mm for brake levers, and 14mm for decomp/start levers. It is important to have the cable wire centered in the lever. So there is a groove that the sheet metal lever sits in when the lever is squeezed. That groove keeps the socket bolt from sliding sideways. Without that groove, the cable still functions, but maybe not as well, or it might make a “click” sound and feel, when it does not stay centered. A longer one will substitute for a short one, with a 8mm washer under it. But the washer covers the centering groove, so it might not perform as well as an original.

25. Minarelli

Minarelli is the name of the engine. Only the lower end of the throttle and start cables are for the engine. The cables upper ends are for whatever controls that are on the bike’s handlebars. The brake cables lower ends are for whatever brakes the bike has. The cable lengths depend on the frame and handlebars.

Cables for mopeds with Minarelli V1 engines, 1970’s Domino controls and Grimeca brakes, are in Cimatti.

Cables for mopeds with Minarelli V1 engines, 1970’s Taiwan controls and brakes, are in General or Lazer.

26. Morini

Morini “Motori Franco Morini” is the name of the engine (except for “F. Morini” mopeds made by LEM, and “Moto Morini” motorcycles). Only the lower end of the throttle and start cables are for the engine. The cables upper ends are for whatever controls that are on the handlebars. The brake cables lower ends are for whatever brakes the bike has.  The cable lengths depend on the frame and handlebars.

Cables for 1970’s Italian mopeds with Morini engines, Domino controls and Grimeca brakes, are in Malaguti.

27. Motobecane Cables

This section is for French made 1970’s Motobecane mopeds, not for the Italian made Motobecane Sebring.

A. Model Series 50, 40 and 7 (1970-1980)

Myrons new original Motobecane cables in Aug 2019. Some are used.

original and substitute cables

Motobecane Cables are all single-ended, with a screw-on pinch bolt at one end. So the inner wire can slide out and be replaced separately. Motobecane controls and Gurtner carburetor choke parts are not like any other moped, so those cable related things are unique to Motobecane.

Motobecane Replacement Cables are mostly “substitute” versions that are recently made. Some are “original” ones made in France in the 1970’s. The substitute cables perform better than original ones. The nylon lining makes the wire slide easier. But substitute cables have a different appearance. This matters most when you replace one cable and you want it to look like the other cables.

Cable Parts: The cable parts colored blue here are sold separately.
Cable Parts:
They are not included with a new cable.

SubstitutesSubstitute items have an “s” on the end of the part number. Original things do not.

Notes:

1. Cable lengths are for original handlebars. Low or narrow bars need shorter cables. Tall or wider bars need longer cables.

2. Motobecane original cables are nylon lined. Most models are silver cables, that get sunburned brown where they are not covered by the grey sleeve. Even though they look bad, they still function.

3. The sleeve/sheath becomes brittle with age. When that happens, it breaks in certain places. Then the cables get flexed only in certain places. So new cables in old brittle sleeves/sheaths is not a good idea. It’s better to remove or replace the brittle sheaths with new flexible ones. When the sheath is flexible, the whole cable flexes gently. It performs better and lasts longer.

4. Always lube cables with a drip oil can, or buy a small bottle of cable lube. Often cables and throttles resist moving, and at first seem bad, but become freer after oil gets inside them.

The cable parts are the same as those for 1970-80 Motobecane 50V with center-mount carburetor, except the choke and throttle cables are an inch shorter.

28. Murray Cables

Murray mopeds have American-made nylon-lined cables, the same type as AMF. They have the same lengths as Puch Series B and Sears Free Spirit, close relatives of Murray.  See Puch Cables below.

29. Peugeot Cables

Peugeot 102 and 103 cables are all single-ended. So the inner wires can slide out and be replaced separately. The sleeves/housings are all black, 2.0mm ID by 5.0mm OD, for both 1.6mm brake wires, and 1.2mm throttle, choke, decomp wires. The original housing 53409 for all cables was sold by the foot. The right and left side cables ran through a black outer housings or sheaths, 11mm ID by 13mm OD, part no. 69774, also sold by the foot.

Original Peugeot moped cables are shown below. They do not have crimped-on end caps at the conduit ends. This is how most vintage bicycle cables are. The “ferrule” #11 looks like an “end cap”, but it fits loose and slides on and off easily. A true end cap is permanently attached to the conduit.

Replacement Peugeot moped cables do have end caps on both ends. This is how motorcycle cables are. They are black, 5mm thick, and lined for low friction. Modern lined cables are way better than vintage non-lined.

31. Rizzato Cables

Rizzato Califfo is a 1970’s Italian moped with Domino “1970’s chrome” type controls, but the throttle is a “wrap-around” type, instead of the usual “sliding block” type. So it takes a double-ended throttle cable, specific to that model bike. The throttle has no adjuster threads, and the center-located carburetor has no curved pipe. Those details affect the length of the exposed inner wire. At the throttle end, an 8mm diameter ferrule (end cap) is added over the regular 6mm crimp-on end cap, to keep the cable end centered and straight.

32. Sachs Cables

Sachs is both an engine name and a bike name. Sachs mopeds are made by Hercules. Cables for Sachs mopeds are above in Hercules.

Sachs engines are in many different mopeds. The choke, throttle and start cables lower ends go to the engine, but the upper ends go to the controls of the bike. Most Taiwan bikes have General or Lazer type controls, while Dutch (Sparta), Austrian (KTM), German (Hercules, Kynast), and American (Columbia) bikes have Magura type controls. So there are many “Sachs cables” possible. Some interchange and some don’t.

Sachs-Magura Throttle Cables: These are for 1970’s mopeds with Sachs 504 or 505 engines and Magura “wrap-around” type throttle. Many bikes do not have their original throttle cable elbows, since the carburetor or top parts can easily be swapped from other models. So to avoid guessing, the elbow length, short or long, must be identified visually, to get the correct throttle cable.

Sachs Carb Elbows
L long, R short

Long and Short Elbow (bendy): There is a 12mm (about 1/2″) difference between short and long elbow. For a short elbow the exposed length must be 114 to 121 mm. For a long elbow the exposed length must be 125 to 132 mm. The cable adjuster has an adjustment range of 7mm. So the 12mm of slack from a “long” cable used in a “short” elbow cannot be adjusted out.

To get around this, in the 1980’s one aftermarket Sachs throttle cable (Gadabout MS-4282) had an inline adjuster, with a wide adjustment range (13mm). This cable worked on either short or long elbows.

33. Sears Cables

Sears Allstate (late 1950’s and 60’s) moped cables are not yet covered here. They are the same as 60’s Puch cables.

Sears Free Spirit (late 1970’s) moped cables are displayed and offered in Puch Cables, since they are the same.

Magura 1970’s controls

1982-85 Trac (Laura M56 engine) had a M56 engine, Encarwi carburetor and Magura controls. They were partial remakes of 1978-80 Batavus mopeds. So the throttle, choke and start cables are (almost) the same as “late” Batavus.

There were two kinds of wheels, spoke or mag. Trac spoke wheels had different hubs and brakes, Duck Chang, not Leleu like on Batavus. So the “early” Trac brake spoke wheel brake cables are slightly different from early Batavus.

Domino Black

Domino DA7K, DB7K integrated controls

1985-86 Trac (Laura M56 engine) had a M56 engine, Encarwi carburetor and Domino controls.  So all the cables are different from late Batavus.

1984-90 Trac (Daelim DK50 engine) had a DK50 engine, Mikuni carburetor, and Domino controls.

1986-90 Trac (Daelim DP50 engine) had a DP50 engine, Mikuni carburetor, and Domino controls.

Loop pinch bolts
Tomos M6, Vespa M7

Vespa Controls made by Domino, on the brake cables, have bottomless holes with M6-1.0 threads, so they require upper M6-1.0 adjusters. Most other Italian mopeds have the same controls but have slotted holes with bottoms, that do not need adjusters.

Vespa Brake Arms made by Grimeca, have large swivel type wrap-around or loop pinch bolts. So the brake arms have very large holes. Early Tomos also had loop pinch bolt assemblies, but each piece was slightly smaller than Vespa.

Dellorto carb elbows

Vespa Cables are illustrated below for the Grande only, to save space. The other models cables are the same except for lengths and color.

Vespa Carb Elbow for the Ciao model must be “90 degree”, either #2a or #2b, because the center panel/floor is low.

Yamaha QT50

40. Yamaha Cables

The throttle and choke cables on Yamaha are longer than most, because they go inside the frame, first way down low, then up high and then down again, like a roller coaster. That gives the bike a clean look, and a convenient low step-thru frame. But the bottom low part traps water. This happens with many other cables that go way low then up, like all scooters have.
